Ryan Ogam: Story of fast-rising Harambee Stars hero in Zambia match

When Ryan Wesley Ogam struck in the 75th minute against Zambia on Sunday, August 17, 2025, he not only helped secure Harambee Stars’ place at the top of Group A in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 but also announced himself as Kenya’s new football hero.

The 20-year-old forward has been at the heart of Kenya’s fairytale run, scoring against Zambia but also delivering the lone goal in Harambee Stars’ famous 1-0 win over Morocco earlier in the group stage.

From midfield to striker

Born in Nairobi on December 21, 2004, Ogam’s rise has been anything but ordinary. Initially recruited by Tusker FC as a defensive midfielder, coaches soon noticed his sharp eye for goal.

The switch paid off instantly, he bagged 15 goals in just 17 league appearances for the Brewers in the 2024 FKF Premier League, a tally that made him one of the most lethal finishers in the country.“He is a natural finisher with great movement,” national team head coach Benni McCarthy said ahead of the tournament. “Players like him don’t come around often.”

A journey through clubs

Ogam’s footballing journey began in Nairobi’s grassroots scene with Galaxy FC and Sunrise FC before stints at UEFA Despanol.

His senior debut came with Rainbow FC in the National Super League, followed by a spell with Elite Falcons FC in the UAE. In 2024, he returned home to join Tusker, a move that set him on the path to the national team.

He earned his first Harambee Stars call-up in January 2025 during the Mapinduzi Cup, and just months later, he is leading Kenya’s charge on the continental stage.

Kenya’s rising hope

Ogam’s blend of pace, positioning, and composure in front of goal has been pivotal as Harambee Stars chase CHAN glory.

His goals have not only kept Kenya unbeaten but have also given the team the belief that continental silverware is within reach.
