Raila promises Harambee Stars players Ksh500K each
ODM leader Raila Odinga has pledged to reward Harambee Stars players Ksh500,000 each following their dramatic 1–0 victory over Zambia in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
Raila, who joined President William Ruto in the Harambee Stars dressing room after the final whistle, congratulated the players, prayed with them, and urged them to keep believing in themselves. His remarks were met with loud cheers from the jubilant squad.“I decided to come and say hongera if we can get it. That if we draw or lose, you’re going to play out on the road. I don’t want you to play in front of all the fans here. No, sir,” Raila said, drawing laughter from the players.
In unison, the Stars responded with chants of “Baba ongeza! Baba ongeza! Baba ongeza!” prompting Raila to confirm that each player would indeed receive Ksh 500,000, a gesture that further electrified the atmosphere. “Mnataka nimsindikie ?500k each”, Raila said
Ruto’s earlier pledge
The players are set for a massive windfall, with Raila’s promise adding to President William Ruto’s earlier incentives.
Ruto had already promised Ksh2.5 million for Sunday’s victory over Zambia, alongside a pledge of Ksh1 million and a two-bedroom affordable housing unit for each player should they triumph in the quarter-finals.“We’ve also agreed on rewards: a win against Zambia next Sunday will earn each player Ksh2.5 million. If they triumph in the quarterfinals, each will be gifted Ksh1 million and a two-bedroom affordable housing unit in a location of their choice,” Ruto said earlier in the week.
The Harambee Stars have been cashing in steadily since the start of CHAN. On August 3, 2025, each player received Ksh1 million after defeating DR Congo, while on August 7,2025 they pocketed Ksh500,000 following a draw with Angola. Their 1–0 triumph against Morocco on August 10 saw them earn another Ksh1 million each.“We’ve also agreed on rewards: a win against Zambia next Sunday will earn each player Ksh2.5 million. If they triumph in the quarterfinals, each will be gifted Ksh1 million and a two-bedroom affordable housing unit in a location of their choice,” Ruto said earlier in the week.
